It was Yalda night, the longest night of the year. Following their yearly tradition, everyone had gathered at Grandmother's house. Yousef arrived a little later than the rest, carrying a large box of pastries. As he walked in, several people rose to greet him. Grandmother pulled him into a tight embrace, kissed him over and over, and with all the warmth and joy she had for her beloved grandson, had him sit right beside her. The evening unfolded, warm and intimate; the Yalda spread was laid out, and everyone was talking and laughing, exchanging jokes, clapping, and dancing.
