The Contested Symbolism of Iran’s Flag

Iran’s flag controversy reflects a genuine and long-documented scholarly puzzle: national emblems function as compressed visual arguments about political legitimacy, and Iran’s various flags have never achieved consensus on their meaning or their proper political affiliation across more than a century of academic study (Ghafarpouri & Samanian, 2026). This lack of resolution is not unique to Iran; comparative research on European flags shows that national emblems everywhere accrue contested meanings as political movements reinterpret inherited symbols for new purposes (Elgenius, 2007).   A Brief History of Persian Flags The oldest layer of this symbolic tradition may extend further back than commonly assumed.
